I am an amateur photographer looking for alternative to displaying my photos without having to frame them?
I would like to know if there is a cheaper alternative to framing pictures? Sometimes I have seen in galleries where they have just a white/or black board in the back and picture on top of it. Could someone please direct me to where i can get the material to display the pictures in an elegant way without having them framed? My enlargements would be about 18 x 24. Thank you in advance.
It is obvious you haven't been out looking for what you seek. The prints you describe hanging by the means you say could easy be duplicated if you understood what was used. You want us to tell you all you need and wish not to seek it out your self.

As said, it could be foam core or a variation there of. It only requires imagination and trial and error to find a mounting way that works.

Some use 1/8th to 1/4 inch tempered masonite, plexiglas or even plywood to mount their prints on. A lot of what you use depends entirely on you.

I have used everything from standard mounting board to old cabinet doors to mount photos on. The more you think outside the box, the more you see to .. or can be used as.. a mounting substrate.

One idea is to mount your prints on a solid board (any kind) and then make a frame that allows the size of the board to set on top of it.

Too many ideas here and with out images, you haven't a clue.

As said, think out of the box and think of old cabinet doors as a mounting surface.

Good luck

Photography question?
I am an amateur photographer just starting in the photography. I saw a lot of pictures that focus only on one thing for ex. face and the whole background is black or really, really bright(white). Is it the work of the photographer or program that you can do it? If it is the program, what feature they use?
this is the example
www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=www.interweb.in/attachments/pc-wallpapers/25156d1235389633-penelope-cruz-wallpapers-images-photos-picture-gallery-penelope-cruz-face-cut-pic.jpg&imgrefurl=www.interweb.in/pc-wallpapers/22967-penelope-cruz-wallpapers-images-photos-picture-gallery.html&usg=__cSrI3KrPM6lhIOCSpBkBeXHQKfk=&h=768&w=1024&sz=80&hl=en&start=146&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=Z4BT8EIkiiD9dM:&tbnh=113&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dface%2Bphotos%26start%3D126%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26ndsp%3D21%26tbs%3Disch:1

on this photos Cruz has only her face and the rest is black or white. Please help me how to do it?
You're looking at high end studio lighting, and a very professional photographer. Just to venture a guess, I'd say there was probably 2-3 lights used, with directional grids, to make sure she was the only thing lit.

Here's how you can do it on the fly with fill flash outdoors, not going to give same look, that will take a while to get that look down. Read about using fill flash, set it to underexpose the background quite a bit:

Photo mounting/printing
this question is extremely amateur, but here goes:
how in the world do photographers get their photos printed onto that black foam core-looking material?? I understand that you can "mount" photos, but doesn't that mean the photo is just sort of tacked onto the foam board? In which case, that's not what I want.... I would like the photo to appear as though it had been printed on to the board. Do you have to find a specialist who can print directly onto the board, then? If so, what is this process called/ how would I find someone who can do this?

Essentially, I do not want to frame my photos, I want them to be printed onto a board (sort of like the canvas gallery wrap, but without the canvas material) and ready to mount.
Hi Lucky

You have the low and hack tack foam available depending on what you plan to use it for. The low tack can be repositioned but the high tack, has to be worked from the center and moving towards the edge. This is the ideal for posters.

Then you have the primed and unprimed canvas which is probably what you are looking for if it has to be gallery quality.

How much a "hair makeover" cost?
First of all I'm a boy, 14 years old I have shoulder lenght black hair which I've kept without any real style for a long time, with an occasional fringe done in an amateur style, it tends to expand sideways when I brush it, it's normal type in terms of grasyness, not very pretty really, so yeah it's kind of messed up and it's been like that for a time. I have a fairly big forehead so I am looking for something to cover it, I was looking at something along lines of www.hairstylesdesign.com/gallery/long_men_hairstyles_508.php

Does that hairstyle have a "name"? And how much would it cost? How would I approach a hairdresser about it without being embarrasing

From a girls point if view, I would get rid of the long hair
Olympus E-500 Evolt, Nikon D50 or Canon Rebel xTI/400?
i can't seem to decide which brand/type of DSLR i want :S i'm an amateur photographer and have previously not owned a DSLR before (only toy cameras or point or shoot ones). i'm interested in a camera that is less or upto $800, is appropriate for spontaneous/action/landscape photography.

some of the features i'm looking for are:
- good colours (for flesh and earth tones)
- quick start up
- quiet operation
- image stabilization
- high continous frame rate / shutter speed
- black and white mode
- low noise at high ISO
- panorama mode, preferably

i know most cameras have some, if not all of these features - but do you have any personal recommendations of your own? do you have a gallery showcasing your pictures? any help would be much appreciated.
Virtually all of the entry-level SLRs will have good colors, quick start up, b&w mode, and better high ISO performance than a point and shoot.

You can expect to get about 2.5 to 3 frames per second, much better than a point and shoot.

Generally, for panorama shots, this is done in post-processing using software to crop the image to the way you want it.

Image stabilization can either be in-body or in the lens, depending upon which brand you buy.

Cameras you should consider:
1) Olympus E-510 about $570 with a 14-24mm lens at bhphotovideo.com. Has built-in image stabilization and 10mp.

2) Nikon D60 SLR with 18-55mm VR Lens, about $669 at us1camera.com. VR is image stabilization in the lens, and you get 10mp. Very positively reviewed camera. Will have better noise performance than the Olympus.

3) Pentax K200D, which has built in shake reduction in the body. With a lens, it's right at $800 at buydig.com or beachcamera.com.

4) Canon also sells the XTi with an 18-55 Image Stabilization lens, but it's harder to find, because most of the cameras are packaged with the non-image stabilized lens. I can't tell you what the price is, because I can only find the non IS lens.
